Uttar Pradesh, once known for frequent power cuts, has seen a major turnaround in its electricity sector. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state has significantly reduced the gap between power demand and supply, making power shortages almost negligible, even during peak demand periods. According to official data, the difference between electricity requirement and availability in Uttar Pradesh has now come down to nearly zero marking a major shift from the past.

Power demand and supply gap nearly eliminated

In the financial year 2022-23, Uttar Pradesh's total electricity requirement stood at 144,251 lakh units. Over the next few years, the state steadily increased power availability through policy and management reforms. In FY 2023-24, power supply rose to 148,287 lakh units. This further increased to 164,786 lakh units in FY 2024-25. In the current financial year 2025-26, up to December 2025, officials report that the power deficit has been virtually eliminated.

Reliable power supply even during peak demand

The state government has focused on ensuring uninterrupted power supply by strengthening its transmission and distribution systems. Electricity has been sourced on time from surplus power states through the national grid. As a result, Uttar Pradesh has been able to meet electricity demand almost fully, even during high-consumption periods. This has brought major relief to industries, businesses and household consumers.

RDSS and Smart Metering improve DISCOM efficiency

Under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), old and damaged power lines have been replaced and transformer capacities increased. Smart meters have also been introduced to improve monitoring and billing. These steps have helped reduce losses faced by distribution companies (DISCOMs) and strengthened control over power theft, leading to better overall efficiency.

Rural electrification strengthens economy

Large-scale electrification work has also been carried out in rural areas under the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana and the Saubhagya Scheme. With electricity reaching more villages and homes, agriculture, cottage industries and small businesses have received a boost. The improved power supply has also encouraged industrial investment, strengthened the MSME sector and created new employment opportunities across Uttar Pradesh.
